Newspaper Donates £1,000 to The Mullany Fund
The Mullany Fund has received a major cash boost from South Wales’ Evening Post newspaper. The £1,000 dontaion has helped get The Mullany Fund off to a flying start.
Set up in memory of trainee physio Ben and doctor Cath, it will give financial help to UK medical students as well as ensuring the couple’s memory lives on.
Assistant editor Cathy Duncan said: “The sad events in Antigua have touched everyone at the Post.”
“We are more than happy to donate £1,000 towards The Mullany Fund.
“It is vital some good comes of this terrible tragedy.”
A memorial service for the couple takes place today in Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff.
Ben and Cath, both aged 31, were fatally shot while on honeymoon in Antigua on July 27.
Among the people expected to speak at the memorial service is the Rev Martyn Perry, the man who conducted the couple’s wedding, and the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan.
As well as arranging the funeral, family and friends of Ben and Cath have also been hard at work on The Mullany Fund. It has already won the backing of the Swans, Ospreys and Cardiff Blues, who have pledged to hold collections at upcoming matches.
And Ben’s uncle Michael Meredith —along with pal Terry Maloney—are set to take part in a 176-mile fund-raising walk along Offa’sDyke in March next year.
Family and friends have set up a dedicated website for the fund. A group on Facebook has also attracted more than 700 members from across the globe. Ben’s brother Adam, aged 23, said it was vital for both families that the couple’s good work be carried on.
He said: “The Mullany Fund has been launched to support UK students wishing to study medicine or physiotherapy. While we will never replace Cath and Ben, this fund will help others to fill their shoes and continue the work they had started.”
Post assistant editor Mrs Duncan added: “The Evening Post is more than happy to help the family with any publicity they need for the fund.
“We are right behind them all the way.”

"Ben and Catherine leave behind a legacy. They hit the hearts of the nation and the world with such an extraordinary love story."
"I am honoured to support The Mullany Fund, set up to help train new doctors and physiotherapists and keep the dreams of Cath and Ben alive."
