Jamie Roberts Backs Charity Ahead of Collection

RUGBY fans are being asked to pitch in with a fund-raiser for medical students. A bucket collection is taking place at Cardiff Blues’s Heineken Cup against Calvisano this Friday.

All proceeds will be donated to the charity set up in memory of Cath and Ben Mullany, who were killed while on honeymoon.

The bucket collection follows last month’s fund-raiser at the Ospreys vs Scarlets game, which brought the charity a windfall of more than £1,300.

The latest event has been given the backing of Cardiff Blues and Wales player Jamie Roberts.

He said: “I rely on physios in my career as a professional rugby player. I am also studying medicine part-time, so the Mullany Fund holds extra resonance for me. “It is a great way to make sure something good comes out of this awful tragedy.”

So far more than £35,000 has been raised for the Mullany Fund, which gives financial support to trainee physiotherapists and doctors.

It was set up following the murders of trainee physio Ben and Morriston Hospital medic Catherine, who were shot a fortnight after they married.

Their family say it is vital for the couple’s good work to be carried on, and have a string of events planned for the coming months.

On Saturday, a fund-raising ball takes place at The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea.

Ben’s brother Adam said: “We should have a couple of big announcements coming soon. “I can’t mention too much, but one involves a sporting event which could have some very special guests at it —that’s all I’m saying for now.”
