Swans Pitch in for Funds

FOOTBALL fans attending this weekend’s Swans match against Wolves will be asked to dig deep for a good cause. A bucket collection will be taking place outside the Liberty Stadium, with proceeds being donated to the Mullany Fund.

It was set up in memory of physiotherapist Ben and doctor Catherine Mullany, who were murdered while on their honeymoon. Players and bosses at the Championship side have given their full backing to the appeal and are calling on fans to pitch in.

Trainee GP Cath was well known to the Swans after treating former striker Adebayo Akinfenwa for a broken leg and, more recently, Ferrie Bodde’s son Fernando when he was rushed into hospital with asthma.

Club director David Morgan said:
“We’re delighted to be supporting the Mullany Fund. “The club itself will be making a donation to the fund and I’m sure our fans will give whatever they can.”

Around 20 volunteers, armed with buckets and wearing fund T-shirts, will be at the stadium from 1pm on Saturday. The Mullany Fund gives financial help to UK students wishing to study medicine or physiotherapy.

It was set up by the families of Ben and Catherine Mullany, who were fatally shot in Antigua on July 27, with the aim of helping the couple’s dreams live on.

The fund has won the backing of the Duchess of York, and more than £16,000 has been raised so far. Family members say they have been comforted by people’s generosity and messages of support in the wake of their grief.

Cath and Ben’s brothers have also set up a group on social networking site Facebook, championing the fund. They said “Both families appreciate everyone’s efforts and kind words”.
