Sporting Boost for The Mullany Fund

SPORTS stars have signed up to help The Mullany Fund. An auction to raise money for The Mullany Fund takes place in the Swansea Valley next month.

Items going under the hammer include an autographed photo of Wales’s Grand Slam-winning team, a signed Swansea City football and a signed pair of boxing gloves which were worn by cruiserweight boxer Enzo Maccarinelli.

It is being held in the Vadre Hotel, Heol Eithrim, Clydach, on Friday, November 21. Pub landlord Dai Powell, who was a school friend of 31-year-old Ben, said there had been plenty of interest in the auction. He said: “There are some great items on offer. There’s already been loads of interest in the signed Welsh rugby teamphoto, and getting a pair of boxing gloves from Enzo is really special too.”

A number of other prizes will also be up for grabs on the night, including a meal for two at restaurant chain Frankie & Benny’s, as well as a 1980s-themed disco.

Mr Powell said he hoped the night would provide a big boost for The Mullany Fund. The charity, set up by the families of trainee physiotherapist Ben and qualified doctor Catherine, gives financial help to British medical students. So far, more than £23,000 has been raised.

“Ben was a really great guy, and life was never dull when he was around,” added Mr Powell.”

“What happened to him and his wife has really hit home.”

“I think the fund is a great cause. And Ben and Cath’s family are remarkable people.”

“They have been through such sadness, and yet they are still thinking of others.”

“My staff and I will be giving the auction our all.”
