Hundreds Back Online Tribute for Newly Weds
SUPPORTERS from around the world are getting behind the memorial fund set up in honour of tragic newly-weds Ben and Catherine Mullany.
The Mullany Fund, announced by the families last week, will carry on the work the couple started, by supporting UK students who want to train as doctors and physiotherapists.
Now a group has been formed on the social networking website Facebook to publicise the fund and ask people to come up with ideas for sponsored events.
More than 500 well-wishers added their names within two days of the group being launched. And while many are from Wales, others hail from around the UK and some from as far afield as Australia, Hawaii, Switzerland and Germany.
A message Ben’s brother Adam posted on the site said: “Any ideas you guys can put forward for raising money will be much appreciated.”
Ben and Cath, of the Swansea Valley, were murdered on their honeymoon in Antigua in July. A memorial service for them will be held at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff on Wednesday.
On the Facebook group page, the families said: “Cath and Ben Mullany dreamt of a married life caring for others in the local community—Cath as a doctor and Ben as a physiotherapist.
“Cath and Ben’s dreams were cut short by theirmurder on the last day of their honeymoon in Antigua in 2008.
“The Mullany Fund was launched by the family and friends of Cath and Ben Mullany to support UK students wishing to study medicine or physiotherapy.
“As a family, we have lost two beloved members. The Mullany Fund will help us to preserve their memories and ensure that their dreams live on. As a country, we have lost a well respected doctor and a promising young physiotherapist.
While we will never replace Cath and Ben, this fund will help others to fill their shoes and continue the work they had started. Thank you for all your help and support.”

"Ben and Catherine leave behind a legacy. They hit the hearts of the nation and the world with such an extraordinary love story."
"I am honoured to support The Mullany Fund, set up to help train new doctors and physiotherapists and keep the dreams of Cath and Ben alive."
